Overcoming Slumps: Focus on Team Contribution

I recently spoke with a head coach about a team struggling to perform. The players were caught up in their own expectations, fixated on what wasn’t working. Their focus had turned inward, locked on their struggles instead of their strengths.

I had a conversation with the team about shifting their mindset—recognizing what they do well and understanding that every player has ways to contribute to team success beyond just scoring points or making plays.

Even the greatest face rough patches. In The Last Dance, Michael Jordan didn’t always have perfect games—but he never let a slump define him. Instead of dwelling on what wasn’t working, he looked for ways to impact the game—whether through defense, leadership, or setting up his teammates for success.

When you’re struggling, ask yourself:
🔹 How can I still add value?
🔹 What can I do to uplift my team?
🔹 Where can I channel my energy to make an impact?

Your worth isn’t measured by one performance but by your ability to show up, adapt, and contribute. Even when your shot isn’t falling, you can still play great defense. You can still lead. You can still make a difference.

How do you push through tough moments and refocus on team success? As a leader, how can you instill this mindset and behavior into your team members?
